The President of the United States takes pleasure
in presenting the BRONZE STAR MEDAL to
LANCE CORPORAL ROBERT
A. DYER, JR.
UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS
for service as set forth in the following
CITATION:
"For heroic achievement in connection with operations against the enemy
in the Republic of Vietnam while serving as a Radio Operator with Company
K, Third Battalion, Twenty-Seventh Marines, First Marine Division. On
24 May 1968 during Operation Allen Brook in Quang Nam Province, Company
K was attacking the village of Le Bac (1) which was well fortified and
occupied by a large North Vietnamese Army force. As the company approached
the area, the Marines encountered heavy enemy automatic weapons, mortar
and sniper fire and sustained numerous casualties. As a member of the
Tactical Air Control Party, Lance Corporal DYER skillfully coordinated
the fire from armed helicopters against the enemy positions. Realizing
that the numerous casualties lying exposed to the enemy fire required
prompt medical attention and evacuation, he ran across the fire-swept
area to a pagoda where he established a temporary aid station. Without
regard for his own safety, he returned to the besieged area three times
to assist wounded Marines to the covered position while continuing to
coordinate friendly small arms fire and direct air strikes by armed
helicopters to within ten meters of friendly positions. When the forward
units were ordered to withdraw to facilitate the employment of supporting
arms, he assisted in the evacuation of numerous casualties and was among
the last to leave the area. Throughout the fire fight, his heroic efforts
and calm presence of mind were an inspiration to all who served with
him and contributed significantly to the accomplishment of his unit's
mission. Lance Corporal DYER's courage, outstanding professional skill
and unswerving devotion to duty throughout were in keeping with the
highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval
Service.
Lance Corporal DYER is authorized to wear the Combat "V".
