The President of the United States takes pleasure
in presenting the BRONZE STAR MEDAL to
CORPORAL WILLIAM C.
JUNG
UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS
for service as set forth in the following
CITATION:
For heroic achievement in
connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam
while serving as a Squad Leader with Company K, Third Battalion, Twenty-Seventh
Marines, First Marine Division. On the afternoon of 24 May 1968, during
Operation Allen Brook southwest of Da Nang, elements of Company K suddenly
came under a heavy volume of small arms and automatic weapons fire from
a numerically superior North Vietnamese Army force. Realizing the seriousness
of the situation, Corporal JUNG unhesitatingly commenced maneuvering
his squad forward in order to assist the lead elements of his unit.
Undaunted by the hostile rounds impacting near him, he skilifilly maneuvered
his squad through dense foliage, shouting words of encouragement to
his men and directing their fire upon the enemy emplacements. Although
painflilly wounded, he fearlessly continued moving forward, boldly exposing
himself to the enemy fire while throwing hand grenades. Upon reaching
the besieged unit, he ably supervised the evacuation of casualties and
skillfully deployed his men to cover the withdrawal of the other Marines.
His bold initiative and resolute determination were an inspiration to
all who observed him and contributed significantly to the accomplislunent
of his unit's mission. Corporal JUNG's courage, aggressive fighting
spirit and steadfast devotion to duty at great personal risk were in
keeping with the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United
States Naval Service.
Corporal JUNG is authorized to wear the Combat "V".
