Fellow Marines - It is with the deepest sadness and greatest possible respect that I must announce to you the passing of our friend, brother in arms, founder of this website, and author of our collective history. Robert A. Simonsen lost his year long battle with cancer on Saturday 24 July 2010, at age 62. Words alone can not express how much Bob meant and will always mean to me and his community of friends. A memorial service is tentatively scheduled at Riverside (CA) Nat'l Cemetery for 13 August, date of course subject to change. I will post any further details. God Bless you Bob, God Bless your family, and thank you for all you have done for 3/27. Semper Fidelis! Terry Rigney

I'm sorry to say that I never met Bob, but it is easy to derive from the comments contained in our Guestbook that he is a fine man. What he created for all 3/27 must live on, not only to honor him, but to keep our history alive. We will all join ranks again one of the days and the bond of 3/27 will once again collectively exist. It is with heavy heart that we prepare to say goodbye to our fellow Leatherneck and for many of you close friend. May God Bless and watch over him and his family as they travel thru this terrible time. Thank-you Bob for all you have done. Semper Fidelis .... Ron

E-mail from Nan Simenson says that Bob is suffering and very near the end. Our friend is fighting death to the bitter end. I agree with Tim and others that we should continue Bobs work by collecting stories and solving questions. This has been and will continue to be a source of pride and togetherness for all of 3/27. Semper Fi, Dale

I am not a writer or at times make a sentence make sense, but I hope that someone out there from 3/27 will try as they may, to keep Bob's legacy a reality. In Bob's eyes we (are)are all hero's. I am sure that most of you will agree, we DID NOT feel like heros until Bob put us all in a book. Where would we be today if not for a few kind words from Bob. It could have all ended on Go Noi, but Bob made it history. We all go to tell the world the HELL we went through. When we (your brothers) say 3/27 we think of you Bob. Bob we truly love you and please say hello to those who left before us and save a seat for the rest of us. We all salute you!! Your BROTHER, Tim Admin reply: Tim.....Bob's legacy will live as long as there are men of good spirit and pure heart to follow. His thoughts are our thoughts... he simply found the means to convey them to the world, in our honor. A world that was far from understanding of our plight...a world that was at that time unready to accept the warrior while it was already denouncing his struggle. Bob did this for us, and his pronouncements will bear fruit for the next generation to the tenth power. Men like Bob come along less than once a generation. We are truly blessed to have had him as one of our own.

In a world full of 'STOLEN VALOR' Bob is the proof that 'EVERY MARINE' can prove his own existence. This is my story, this is my web site. Without Bob there is extreme limited resources to prove one's combat history. For that and all you've done I am truly grateful. You are in my prayers always!!!

My neighbor past away was this week. Bill was a Veteran of WWII. He was in the Navy and was a Higgins boat driver in the Pacific. He once told me this story; It was an island called Tarawa and he was bringing the first wave of Marines in. They had misjudged the tides and a lot of boats got hung up on the coral and the Marines had to jump off and to wade in with water up to their necks. The the firing from the beach was intense. When he dropped the gate all the Marines went out but one. This young Marine was frozen in the back of the boat. Bill carried a 45 pistol and was given orders to shoot anyone who didn't get off. But he couldn't shoot this young man. Bill went back and got the second wave. This was even worse than the one before. The water was littered with Fallen Marines. The gate went down and off they went. Bill looked out at the scene and then at the young Marine. ''Those are your buddies out there,'' he said. The Marine let out a yell and jumped in the water. With all Bill had seen in the horror that day and the ones to come,he thought of that young Marine everyday for the rest of his life. Did he make through that battle and get to come home as he did? I think today there is quite a reunion going on behind those Pearly Gates. I'd like to see it, but I'll bide my time. Kevin Hussey SR

Had it not been for Bob Simonsen most of us would never have had so many 'holes' filled in the history of our minds. The vast majority of us would never have seen or spoken again with men whom we once shared laughter, c-rats, pain, heartbreak, terror, fox holes, letters, pictures from home, 'Jody's got your girl and gone'Dear John's",hot water from a hotter canteen, night watch, day patrols, night patrols, leeches, hot beer, incoming, outgoing, lies about your sex life and how all the girls back home 'dig me,' and the intimacy of being able to tell another dirty, sweaty, incredibly tough, ragged, hardened Marine that you miss your mom back home. Bob, you gave us something we would have lost to never be seen again. You gave us back our friends that see the same pictures in our minds as do we. We all love you. YOU are the true spirit'Semper Fi.' So, here's to you, our friend and brother. We'll see you at the gate.
